Ponmudi Hill Station is located at a distance of around 61 km from the city of Trivandrum at an altitude of 1100 meteres. Ponmudi is a part of the Western Ghats which extends from Gujarat to Kanyakumari. The name Ponmudi in Malayalam means "Gold Peak". It got the name from the kaani tribe belief that god keeps gold in these ranges. Ponmudi is surrounded by Grasslands and Shola forests, which makes it more beautiful.

From Trivandrum, take the State Highway 2 (Thiruvananthapuram-Nedumangad-Schenkotta Road) to Golden Valley via Nedumangad-Chullimanoor-Vithura-Theviyode. After Golden valley, there are 22 hairpin curves before reaching Ponmudi, which is a sight to behold. A variety of scenery can be seen along the journey with Tea plantations on one side of the road and steep cliffs on the other. There are several bus services available from Thiruvananthapuram KSRTC depot directly to Ponmudi.
